Gayle King Headed to Space on Jeff Bezos’ Rocket

Gayle King is going to space…literally.

The CBS Mornings co-host will journey into outer space Katy Perry, Jeff Bezos’ girlfriend Lauren Sanchez, and three other women for the all-women led excursion on the Amazon founder’s rocket company, according to NBC News.

Bezos’ Blue Origin announced in a statement on Thursday, Feb. 27, that its 11th crew flight will officially blast off this spring on an NS-31 mission with fellow crew members Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn.

Per Blue Origin, Sanchez “brought the mission together” and “is honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come.”

“This mission will be the 11th human flight for the New Shepard program and the 31st in its history. To date, the program has flown 52 people above the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space,” the statement said.

Bowe is a former NASA rocket scientist, global STEM advocate and CEO of engineering firm STEMBoard, per Blue Origin. While Nguyen, is a bioastronautics research scientist, and Flynn is a former fashion and HR professional turned film producer.

Speaking about her upcoming space mission during CBS Mornings, King said, “I don’t know how to explain being terrified and excited at the same time. It’s like how I felt about to deliver a baby.”

King also shared the advice she got from longtime bestie Oprah Winfrey and her children.

“Once Kirby and Will and Oprah was fine with it, I was fine,” King said. “I thought Oprah would say no, no. She said, ‘I think if you don’t do it, when they all come back and you had the opportunity to do it, you will be kicking yourself.’ She’s right.”

There is currently no set date and time for the space mission, but Blue Origin notes that lift-off will happen sometime this spring.
