April 4 will mark the 50th anniversary of the  assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the Memphis, Tennessee. It’s always been important to remember this day and honor Dr. King. However on the 50th anniversary and in light of today’s political climate this day has more significance than ever.

Roland Martin talks with journalist Wendi C. Thomas about the significance of the assassination and how the city of Memphis has changed since then.

“Yah I think it’s going to be a big time in Memphis. I think if we try to show the world how far we’ve come since King was killed 50 years ago,” explains Thomas.

Although Black people have thrived since the assassination of Dr.King, there is still so much work to be done in getting everyone to make a better life.

“Said high school graduate and rates college graduate rates, Black people have made amazing strides since the 60’s but that hasn’t translated into money in our pockets for Black people,” explained Thomas. “52% of Black children live below the poverty line in Memphis…We’re not close enough to freedom.”
