At the Ronald Reagan dinner, Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) communications director Ian Walters made a comment saying Michael Steele, the former chairman of the Republican National Committee, was elected to that position because he was Black. He said that while Steele was in the room to hear it.
Roland Martin talks with Michael Steele about the comment and what it says about the Republican party.
“He makes the comment and a brother comes out the room saying you see this. I was like, ‘oh hell no what’s going on in there,’” explained Steele. “I went inside the room and kind of stood there.”
On his radio show the next day he had a conversation with Matt Schlapp the head of CPAC about the incident in which Steele believes turned out to be a revealing conversation.
“What was in the conversation that Matt and I had on the show the next day is the kind of conversation that typically happens in closed rooms,” explained Steele. “There are a lot of issues that this party has to confront and number one is race… they don’t know how to talk about it.”
When asked why these kinds of things are happening, Steele responded, “A lot of this is happening and coming up because of an environment has been created in which this is okay.”
