A Look at The Six Major Plane Crashes That Occurred Over the Past 12 Months

In the last year, several plane crashes have occurred. With a high number of casualties, 2024 was one of the worst years for the industry since 2018.

A number of companies have experienced incidents that have cost dozens of passengers and crew members their lives. In contrast, the year 2023, which is considered to be the safest year in recent history with no deaths in large commercial flights.
There are numerous factors that specialists have identified, including the potential lack of training in unique situations, the growing severity of conflicts in certain regions, and the technical complexity of specific aircraft models.
Despite the fact that the number of flights is still below the pre-pandemic level, airlines were able to restore revenues to historic levels in 2023. Nevertheless, this substantial financial improvement did not lead in a year free of air safety issues. The year 2024 began with expectations of maintaining the growth momentum and the consistent trend of zero fatalities from plane accidents involving large aircraft. However, the facts soon revealed otherwise.

For years, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and other specialized entities have been collecting statistical data that confirms a significant decrease in fatal aviation incidents, particularly in the 2000s.
In this aspect, 2023 was a safety milestone because it saw the fewest serious incidents and zero fatalities on commercial flights. Unfortunately, the positive direction was interrupted in 2024 by a series of airline crashes in various regions, some of which received significant media attention.
A look at major plane crashes between January 2024 – January 2025
- On December 29, 2024: South Korea, a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 strayed off the runway while landing at Muan International Airport without landing gear, crashed into a concrete wall. This sad tragedy killed 179 people, making it the worst air catastrophe in South Korean history.
- August 9, Brazil, 2024: A plane operated by the Brazilian carrier VoePass crashed after meeting freezing weather conditions, killing 62 people.
- December 25, 2024: Azerbaijan Airlines’ Embraer SA 190 strayed from its course and crashed near Aktau on December 25, Kazakhstan. The president of Azerbaijan alleged that Russia unintentionally shot down the jet. This incident resulted in 38 fatalities.
- On July 24, 2024: Nepal, a Saurya Airlines plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Kathmandu, killing 18.
- On May 21, 2024: Myanmar, a Singapore Airlines flight encountered significant turbulence, killing one person.
- On January 29, 205: An American Airlines and a Black Hawk helicopter collided and crashed in D.C. The plane was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members en route from Wichita, Kansas. Three soldiers on a training mission were aboard the helicopter. The incident is currently under investigation.
In addition, other flight catastrophes with lesser casualties occurred in Canada, Indonesia, Russia, Congo, and Saudi Arabia. These occurrences occurred under a variety of circumstances, including technical issues, severe weather conditions, and, reportedly, geopolitical conflicts. The combined impact of these tragedies has led to increased concern about aviation safety.
