Mayor Vi Lyles announced Monday that Charlotte will boost security across its public transit system following the deadly stabbing of a 23-year-old woman on the city’s light rail.

In a letter to residents dated Sept. 8, Lyles said there will be an immediate increase in security at Blue Line platforms along with stricter fare enforcement. She added that Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers will step up patrols at key transit locations.

The measures come days after CATS released video showing the fatal, unprovoked attack of a Ukrainian woman on board a light rail train.

Lyles said CATS will soon introduce new safety initiatives, including bike units and urban terrain vehicles. The agency is also working to hire nearly 30 additional security officers over the next few months.
