Border Patrol Agents May Be Deployed to Charlotte for New Operations

Charlotte could soon see U.S. Border Patrol agents arrive as part of a new federal initiative, according to reports from CBS News and CNN.
Federal officials told the outlets that agents currently stationed in Chicago may be reassigned to Charlotte and New Orleans as early as this week, with operations expected to begin later this month.
Mecklenburg Sheriff Garry McFadden said in a Tuesday evening statement that neither he nor CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings had been formally or informally briefed on any planned federal immigration operation. He added that federal officials should coordinate with local law enforcement to help ensure public safety.
The officials emphasized that plans are still being finalized. The potential move is part of the Trump administration’s broader immigration enforcement efforts.
U.S. Border Patrol, the law enforcement arm of U.S. Customs and Border Protection under the Department of Homeland Security, typically focuses on the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders.
While the agency has occasionally conducted operations in U.S. cities, such actions away from border regions are rare, according to the New York Times.
