Missy Elliott Honored as a True Pioneer at the 10th Annual Culture Creators Brunch

The legendary Missy Elliott was moved to tears at the 10th annual Culture Creators Innovators & Leaders Awards Brunch. Held during BET Awards week at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the event celebrated Black creatives who continuously push the cultural envelope. Elliott took home the prestigious Amazon Music Visionary Icon Award, cementing her legacy as a foundational pillar of modern music and style.

While accepting the honor, the Virginia native delivered a deeply emotional speech reflecting on her groundbreaking career. “When you are a visionary, you see these things and even if they are years ahead, you look back and be like, ‘Dang, this makes so much sense now,'” she told the audience.

Elliott candidly shared that she never initially wanted to be a solo artist. Music executive Sylvia Rhone convinced her to record just one album in exchange for the chance to eventually launch her own record label. That single album evolved into a massive, multi-platinum career that completely reshaped the visual landscape of hip-hop and R&B. Overcome with gratitude, Elliott admitted, “I be so full in my heart because you don’t know where I come from… I’m a lot stronger on the outside.”

Celebrating a Full Room of Icons

Beyond Elliott’s big moment, the afternoon honored an elite lineup of Black cultural heavyweights who own their narratives:

Jermaine Dupri, Druski, Janelle James, Suzanne de Passe, Bethann Hardison, Jason Lee and Andrew Hawkins  Congratulations to the queen, Missy Elliott, and all of the incredible 2026 honorees!
