Crystal Mason was sentenced to 5 years in prison for illegally voting in 2016. While on probation for a past crime, she was not aware that she was committing voter fraud. Roland Martin talks with Mason and her attorney Kim Cole about her case.

“I just went to the church got odd work I went to the church and I went up there to vote and her looked on the list and said my name wasn’t there,” explained Mason. She was told she could submit a provisional form to vote.

“I got a notification for my arrest that I illegally voted,” explained Mason. When she got arrested she told the cop, “No ma’am I didn’t illegally vote I used my name.”

Mason had no knowledge that she was not allowed to vote while on probation.

“There are a couple of cases as a matter of fact in Tarrant county another woman was sentenced to 8 years in prison,” explained Cole.

As a result of this incident, Mason lost her job and is unable to take care of her four kids.

“She will be filing an appeal. We are going to diligently pursue an appeal in all hopes that they will review this and ensure that justice is served in this matter,” explained Cole.
