Radio One is celebrating Black History Month by honoring local modern day history makers.

“Pretty Brown Girl” is a top ranked organization dedicated to empowering young girls of color. Their mission is to educate girls of color and encourage self-acceptance by cultivating social, emotional, and intellectual well-being.

Sheri Crawley and her husband, Corey in 2010 founded the organization after wanting to encourage their daughters to know that they were “pretty brown girls.” They saw the need to address harmful messages about skin-tone and wanted to provide a positive image for girls of color.

The couple initially created a product line with the message “Pretty Brown Girl” that also included a doll modeled after their daughters. Today, the organization has expanded to more than just a line. It offers various programs, clubs, and events for young girls to love the skin they’re in.
