Dr. Venita Simpson became the first Black woman to complete The Baylor College of Medicine’s neurosurgeon residency program in Texas. The neurosurgery department that is housed at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, is one of Baylor’s highest-ranked department in the nation. Dr. Simpson says, “she knew there were going to obstacle getting into medical school.” Even her high school guidance counselor told her to be “realistic,’ and she had a 4.0 GPA. The counselor had recommended another student of privilege for the scholarship she was applying. That’s why you never let anyone tell you what you can’t do.
