The Texas Debate: What You Missed

Things got heated last night during the Texas Debate that featured incumbent Republican Ted Cruz and his democratic challenger Collin Allred as they race to become the Lone Star States’ next senator. WFAA broadcast the one hour event live from their Downtown Dallas studios in effort to help Texans learn more about each candidate ahead of the November elections. Here were there top takeaways from the debate.

What’s on the ballot?

In addition to the president, eligible Texans have the opportunity to cast their ballots for many Texas officials running for office at the federal, state and local levels.

This includes representatives in the U.S. and Texas houses and the following elected offices:

1 U.S Senator (the seat currently held by Ted Cruz)
1 of 3 Railroad Commissioners
15 State Senators
7 State Board of Education members
3 members of the Texas Supreme Court
3 members of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals
5 Chief Justices and various justices for Texas Courts of Appeals

Lower-level judges and local county offices will also appear on the ballot:

Various district judges, including on criminal and family courts
County Courts at Law
Justices of the Peace
District Attorneys
County Attorneys
Sheriffs
Constables
Tax Assessor-Collectors

Some Texas cities, such as Austin, are also holding elections for local offices like mayor and city council members. These city elections may also have runoffs on Dec. 14, if no candidate wins a majority of votes in November. There will be no runoff elections in the county, state and federal elections since candidates in those races were narrowed down during the primaries.
